American Woman Rescued After Being Chained in India

American Woman Found Starving and Chained to Tree in India

An American woman was found chained to a tree and screaming in a forest in Maharashtra, India. Lalita Kayi, 50, was discovered a week ago in Sindhudurg district after locals heard her cries for help. They notified the police, who freed her by cutting off the chain.

Kayi, who was very weak, was taken to a hospital where her health has since improved. On Friday, she was moved to a psychiatric facility for further care. Kayi has told the police that her husband chained her to the tree and left her there without food or water.

Police are searching for her husband in Tamil Nadu, based on the information she provided. Despite her rescue, many details about the case are still unclear.

Pandurang Gawkar, who found Kayi, said he heard her screaming while grazing his cattle. He described seeing her leg tied to the tree and her desperate condition. Villagers and police quickly arrived to help.

Police discovered Kayi had her passport, an Indian ID card, a mobile phone, a tablet, and 31,000 rupees with her. This suggests theft was not the motive. They noted it was fortunate Gawkar was in the area, as the forest is vast and she might have remained unnoticed otherwise.

Kayi was first taken to a local hospital, then transferred to a hospital in Goa. Doctors reported she had leg wounds and appeared to have a mental health condition. On Friday, her condition improved enough for her to be moved to a psychiatric hospital in Ratnagiri.

Kayi, who speaks only English, was a ballet dancer and yoga teacher from the US, specifically from Massachusetts. She moved to India about 10 years ago to study yoga and meditation, where she met her husband. Police believe they may have had a falling out.

Kayi has been unable to explain clearly how she ended up in the forest. She initially communicated with the police and doctors by writing notes. She claimed she was tied to the tree for 40 days without food or water and was given an injection that locked her jaw.

Police are investigating her claims, including the possibility of her surviving without food or water for so long. They have filed an attempted murder case against her husband and are investigating in Tamil Nadu, Goa, and Maharashtra. The US embassy in Delhi has declined to comment on the case due to privacy regulations.

Four Indian Soldiers Killed in Kashmir Gunfight

Four Indian Soldiers Killed in Kashmir as Violence Increases

In Indian-administered Kashmir, a gunfight with suspected militants resulted in the deaths of four soldiers. This incident is part of a recent increase in attacks in the disputed region.

The soldiers were attacked on Monday night during a search operation in the forests of Doda district in Jammu. This follows an incident last week where five soldiers were killed in an ambush in another part of Kashmir, a region contested by both India and Pakistan.

Since 1989, an armed insurgency against Indian rule has led to thousands of deaths in Kashmir. Though violence has decreased in recent years, the Jammu region has recently experienced more bloodshed. There have been at least eight attacks since June.

Last month, nine people were killed and 33 injured when suspected militants fired on a bus carrying Hindu pilgrims. On July 8, five soldiers died in an ambush in Kathua district.

The latest gunfight started when militants, reportedly hiding in the forests, opened fire on the Indian forces conducting a search based on intelligence. The Indian army reported that five soldiers were critically injured, and four of them later died from their injuries. Reinforcements have been sent to the area to stop the attackers from escaping.

Kashmir has long been a contentious region between India and Pakistan, with India accusing Pakistan of supporting militants to disrupt peace. Pakistan denies these allegations.

Unemployed Youth Protest for Exam Postponement

Unemployed Youth Protest for Postponement of Group and DSC Exams

In Hyderabad, many unemployed young people protested at Ashok Nagar X roads on Saturday. They were asking the Congress government to delay the Group – II and III exams, as well as the District Selection Committee (DSC) exam, which is for teacher vacancies.

The protesters held signs and chanted for the exams to be postponed, causing traffic jams in the area. They were concerned about having only one day between the DSC exam, which runs from July 18 to August 5, and the Group – II exam, scheduled for August 7 and 8. They questioned how they could prepare for the four papers of the Group – II services exam with just one day in between.

The job seekers want the government to include current vacancies in the Group – II and III exams and to hold these exams in December. They are asking for at least one month to prepare for the DSC exam. They believe that if the government addresses their concerns, students will study diligently for the next six months.

Beware of Fake Chinese Police Scams Worldwide

Scammed by Fake Chinese Police

Chinese people worldwide are being targeted by a scam where criminals pretend to be Chinese police. A British-Chinese woman, Helen Young, shared her story with the BBC. She lost her life savings to con men who wore police uniforms in video calls and even gave her a virtual tour of what looked like a police station.

Helen, an accountant in London, was made to believe she was on China’s most wanted list. Scammers convinced her she was under investigation for a huge fraud in China. They showed her fake evidence and threatened extradition. In fear, Helen sent them her £29,000 life savings as “bail money.”

Helen feels foolish now but says the scam was very convincing. This type of scam has targeted many in the Chinese community. Chinese embassies and the FBI have warned about these scams. In one case, an elderly woman in Los Angeles handed over $3 million, thinking it would stop her extradition.

The scam often starts with a simple phone call. In Helen’s case, it was a person claiming to be a Chinese customs officer about an illegal parcel in her name. She was transferred to “Officer Fang,” who appeared in a video call wearing a police uniform. He showed her a tour of a police station, convincing her it was real.

Officer Fang later accused Helen of involvement in a financial fraud and showed her fake bank statements. He made her sign a confidentiality agreement, warning that breaking it would lead to more trouble. The scammers even made her download an app to monitor her actions.

Helen tried to continue her normal life while working on a personal statement as instructed. She was shown a video of a supposed suspect naming her as an accomplice, which made her believe she was in serious trouble. When Officer Fang threatened extradition, Helen was told to transfer her savings as bail.

After sending £29,000, Helen was asked for another £250,000. Desperate, she tried borrowing from a friend who alerted her daughter. Helen then realized it was a scam. Her bank eventually refunded her money, but the experience was traumatic. She crashed her car twice due to stress and sleep deprivation.

Some victims of these scams have been pushed to fake their own kidnappings to get ransom money from their families. Detective Superintendent Joe Doueihi from New South Wales Police has warned about these “virtual kidnappings.” Victims are coerced into making videos to appear as if they’ve been kidnapped, which are then used to demand ransom.

Scammers also trick victims into believing they are working for the Chinese government, using them to intimidate other Chinese students. These scams are often run by Chinese organized crime groups in places like Myanmar, Cambodia, and Laos. Chinese state media reports that many suspects have been returned to China.

Awareness of these scams is growing. A student in Japan, who realized he was being scammed, recorded his conversation with the scammers. He refused to hand over money and warned others to be cautious of calls from unknown numbers.
