Karachi: Another CCHF Case Confirmed in the City

A 52-year-old resident of Ittehad Town in Karachi has been diagnosed with Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever (CCHF), ARY News reported on Saturday. This marks the third CCHF case reported in Karachi this year.

The patient was admitted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) two days ago after exhibiting symptoms of the tick-borne viral illness. CCHF testing confirmed his infection on Friday.

According to health officials, the patient had been rearing a goat for a month, raising concerns about the potential source of his infection.

Earlier this month, a total of 17 CCHF patients, including both suspected and confirmed cases, were admitted to hospitals in Karachi. Of those, two patients succumbed to the disease, while the rest recovered.

In 2023, Karachi reported three localized outbreaks of CCHF, with one fatality.

The recent death of a doctor diagnosed with CCHF in Quetta highlights the ongoing threat posed by the virus in Pakistan. The doctor passed away while being transported to Karachi for treatment.

Balochistan has a history of CCHF outbreaks, with dozens of fatalities recorded in the late 1980s and mid-1990s.

CCHF is primarily transmitted to humans through tick bites from infected livestock. Symptoms of the disease include severe fever, muscle pain, vomiting, and internal bleeding. CCHF has a high fatality rate, and there is currently no vaccine or specific treatment available.
