Mumbai Airport Shut for 6Hrs: Monsoon Prep & Maintenance

Mumbai Airport to Undergo Scheduled Closure for Monsoon Preparations and Maintenance

Mumbai, May 9th, 2024: Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA), Mumbai’s primary airport, underwent a planned six-hour closure today from 11 am to 5 pm for pre-monsoon maintenance and repairs. This closure is part of CSMIA’s annual monsoon contingency plan, ensuring passenger safety and operational readiness for the upcoming rainy season.

Both runways at CSMIA were non-operational during this period, with regular flight operations resuming after 5 pm. Airlines were notified of the closure well in advance, approximately six months prior, to facilitate adjustments in their schedules and minimize passenger inconvenience.

A Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) was also issued to inform stakeholders about the temporary closure.

Safety First: Preparing for the Monsoon

This yearly practice is crucial for maintaining CSMIA’s high operational standards and passenger safety. During the monsoon season, heavy rains can cause waterlogging and other issues that can impact landings and takeoffs. The pre-monsoon maintenance ensures the runways are in optimal condition to handle these challenges.

Collaboration for Smooth Operations

The maintenance work is conducted in collaboration with aviation officials and airlines to minimize disruption. Specialists inspect the runway surfaces, checking for wear and tear caused by daily operations. This allows for necessary repairs and strengthens the runway for continued safe use.

CSMIA: A Global Hub in Maintenance

CSMIA, one of the world’s busiest airports handling over 900 daily flights, boasts a vast network of runways, taxiways, and aprons spread across nearly 1,800 acres. This yearly maintenance practice reflects the airport’s commitment to safety and operational efficiency.

The closure underscores CSMIA’s comprehensive monsoon contingency plan. This plan ensures the airport’s ability to respond effectively to any potential issues arising from inclement weather during the monsoon season. This, in turn, provides airlines and passengers with the confidence that CSMIA operates 24/7, delivering a seamless travel experience.
