Delhi: Fake Ghee Making Factory Busted In Dwarka, Labels Of Brands Such As Patanjali, Mother Dairy, Amul Recovered
Ghee, or clarified butter, is a staple ingredient in many Indian cuisines and has a variety of health benefits. However, not all ghee products are genuine and some may contain harmful adulterants that can pose serious health risks to consumers. Recently, the Delhi Police busted a fake ghee-making factory in Dwarka that manufactured spurious ghee and sold it in containers with labels of popular brands such as Patanjali, Mother Dairy, and Amul.
According to the police, the factory was located in Dichaun Kalan area of Dwarka and was operated by two men, Anshul Bansal and Arjun Kumar, who were arrested on November 19, 2023. The police also seized 1,259 litres of adulterated ghee, 212 tins of refined oil, 149 tins of Dalda Vanaspati, desi ghee flavour essence, liquid colour, gas stoves, gas cylinders, empty tins, and packing material from the factory.
The police said that the accused used to make spurious ghee using refined oil, colour, essence, and other materials and then pack it in tins with labels of reputed brands. They used to sell the fake ghee to local shops and vendors at a lower price than the original products.
The police also said that the fake ghee was not only inferior in quality and taste, but also harmful for human consumption as it contained trans fats, cholesterol, and other substances that could cause various diseases such as obesity, diabetes, heart problems, and cancer.
The case was registered under sections 420 (cheating), 272 (adulteration of food or drink intended for sale), 273 (sale of noxious food or drink), and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code at Bawana Police Station, Delhi. The police also informed the Food and Safety Department, which took samples from the factory for further analysis.
The police said that they are investigating the source of the raw materials and the supply chain of the fake ghee and are trying to nab the other accomplices involved in the racket.
This is not the first time that a fake ghee manufacturing unit has been busted in Delhi. In September 2020, the police arrested five people for running a similar unit in Bawana and recovered 284 cartons of spurious ghee and other items. The police had said that the accused used to make fake ghee using refined oil, Dalda Vanaspati, colour, and essence and sold it under the names of various brands.
The police have urged the public to be vigilant and careful while buying ghee products and to check the labels, seals, and expiry dates of the products. The police have also asked the public to report any suspicious or illegal activities related to the manufacture or sale of fake ghee to the nearest police station or the helpline number 100.
