Patnagarh Parcel Bomb Case: Meher Convicted

Patnagarh Parcel Bomb Case: Odisha Court Convicts Ex-Professor Punjilal Meher After Seven Years

Patnagarh, Odisha — In a major breakthrough in the infamous Patnagarh parcel bomb case, a court in Odisha’s Bolangir district on Wednesday convicted former English professor Punjilal Meher for masterminding the 2018 attack that killed two people and severely injured a newlywed bride. The verdict brings closure to one of the state’s most shocking and complex criminal investigations.

A Chilling Crime That Shocked Odisha

On February 23, 2018, just five days after their wedding, Soumya Sekhar Sahu, a 26-year-old software engineer, received a parcel at his home in Patnagarh, thinking it was a wedding gift. As he opened it with his wife Reema and his 85-year-old grandmother Jemamani Sahu, a powerful explosion ripped through the house. Soumya and his grandmother died instantly; Reema was critically injured but survived.

Investigation Uncovers a Calculated Plot

The Patnagarh parcel bomb case initially baffled investigators. Over 100 suspects were questioned before attention turned to Punjilal Meher, a colleague of Soumya’s mother, Sanjukta Sahu. Meher had reportedly harbored resentment after being replaced by Sanjukta as principal of Jyoti Vikas College in Bhainsa.

According to the investigation, Meher began collecting materials during Diwali 2017, extracting gunpowder from firecrackers and learning bomb-making techniques online. He assembled the device, disguised it as a wedding present, and used a courier service in Raipur, Chhattisgarh—far from the crime scene and without CCTV—to anonymously send the fatal parcel.

Crucial Clue Leads to Arrest

In a twist, Meher sent an anonymous letter to mislead police by suggesting multiple suspects and a false motive. Investigators noticed that the language, phrasing, and font pointed to someone with a strong command of English—ultimately narrowing the suspect list. A subsequent search of Meher’s home uncovered material evidence linking him to the attack.

“All the evidence was circumstantial, and there were no eyewitnesses,” said IPS officer Arun Bothra, who led the case. “Still, we ensured a watertight investigation. Justice has been served.”

Court Delivers Life Sentence

The court found Meher guilty under several sections of the Indian Penal Code, including murder, attempted murder, and provisions of the Explosive Substances Act. While the prosecution sought the death penalty, the judge ruled the crime did not meet the threshold of the “rarest of the rare,” sentencing Meher to life imprisonment and a fine of ₹50,000.

Reactions and Legacy of the Case

Soumya’s parents expressed mixed emotions. “We were hoping for capital punishment, but we respect the court’s decision,” said Rabindra Sahu, the victim’s father. Sanjukta Sahu also acknowledged the painful closure the verdict brings.

The Patnagarh parcel bomb case will remain etched in Odisha’s legal history as a rare example of a meticulously planned crime driven by personal vendetta. It exposed vulnerabilities in rural courier systems and highlighted the importance of forensic and linguistic analysis in solving modern crimes.

Tourist Family Movie Small Budget, Big Hit Now on OTT

Blockbuster Surprise: Small Budget Movie Made for Rs. 7 Crore Earns Rs. 75 Crore – Now Coming to OTT!

Tourist Family Movie: In the world of movies, we often think that a film needs big stars and a huge budget to become a hit. But every now and then, a small film proves that a strong story is all it takes to win the hearts of the audience. One such film is Tourist Family, which has become a massive success.

This film was made with a modest budget of just Rs. 7 crore, but it surprised everyone by collecting Rs. 75 crore at the box office. It became a huge hit without any big-name actors or hype. What’s more, even legendary director S.S. Rajamouli praised the film, which helped increase its popularity further.

A Slow Start, Then a Massive Boom

Tourist Family didn’t have a grand release or big promotional campaigns. It was released quietly, only in Tamil, on May 1, but word-of-mouth started spreading fast. The film became a talking point because of its emotional story and powerful performances. It even competed with Suriya’s Retro, which had much more buzz, yet it stood out and performed well in theaters.

Soon, fans from other regions, especially Telugu-speaking audiences, began asking when the movie would release in their language. Understanding this demand, the filmmakers have now officially announced that Tourist Family will start streaming on Disney+ Hotstar from June 2, in both Tamil and Telugu. This means that more people can now watch and enjoy the film from the comfort of their homes.

A Director’s Dream Debut

This film is also special because it marks the debut of a new director named Abhishan. Before this, Abhishan was known for making short films on YouTube. With his very first feature film, he has managed to win over audiences and critics alike. His work has been appreciated for its emotional depth, realistic storytelling, and fresh approach.

The Story – A Family with a Secret

The story of Tourist Family centers around Dharmadas (played by Shasikumar), his wife Vasanthi (Simran), and their two sons. They are immigrants from Sri Lanka who come to India illegally, hoping to start a new life. To avoid being caught, they live in hiding with the help of a close relative—Dharmadas’s brother-in-law. He warns them not to tell anyone about their past or where they came from.

But the family’s unusual behavior catches attention. As they try to adjust to their new surroundings, problems begin to arise. Their secret becomes harder to keep, and eventually, they face serious challenges. The film shows the emotional struggles of a family trying to survive while hiding their true identity.

A Crowd Favorite

Audiences connected deeply with the film’s emotional storyline. In theaters, people were seen lining up for tickets. Many praised the natural acting, realistic scenes, and strong direction. The movie was able to create a deep emotional impact despite having no big stars or fancy visuals.

Now, with its OTT release on June 2, more people will get to watch this touching film. Whether you missed it in theaters or want to watch it again, this is your chance.

Early Monsoon Hits India, IMD Issues Alerts Nationwide

Monsoon Intensifies Across India: IMD Issues Multiple Alerts, Delhi Under ‘Yellow’ Alert for May 30–31

NEW DELHI: India is witnessing an early and intense onset of the southwest monsoon, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a series of red, orange, and yellow alerts across several states, including Delhi, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Kerala. The widespread rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds, has heightened flood risks and put local administrations on high alert.

Early Monsoon Arrival and Record Rainfall.

The 2025 monsoon season has arrived ahead of schedule, with the IMD confirming landfall in Kerala on May 25—eight days earlier than usual and the earliest since 2009. The monsoon has rapidly advanced, covering Kerala, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and parts of the Northeast, with Mumbai experiencing its wettest May in over a century and Delhi recording its wettest May since 1901. In Delhi, a recent downpour delivered 81.4 mm of rain in just a few hours, pushing the monthly total to 186.4 mm and breaking previous records.

Alerts and Weather Warnings.

  • Delhi:The IMD has issued a ‘yellow’ alert for May 30–31, warning of light rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds reaching 30–60 kmph. These conditions are expected to persist, though with slightly reduced intensity on May 31. The department forecasts that daytime temperatures will remain below normal, offering relief from the heat and making heatwave conditions unlikely for the rest of the month.
  • Kerala and Karnataka:Red alerts have been issued for several districts, with heavy to extremely heavy rainfall forecast through May 31. The intensity is expected to peak in Kerala (May 25–26) and coastal Karnataka (May 25–27).
  • Maharashtra and Goa:The monsoon has brought heavy rainfall, with Mumbai seeing significant downpours and waterlogging. Alerts remain in place for continued rain and thunderstorms.
  • Northeast India:States such as Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura are bracing for intense rainfall and potential flooding between May 25 and 31.

Flood Risks and Government Response.

With the IMD predicting an above-normal monsoon this year, the central government has advised state administrations to review dam and barrage capacities and prepare for potential floods. Technical support and detailed guidelines are being provided to help mitigate flood risks, particularly in vulnerable areas like the Brahmaputra and Ganga basins.

Outlook.

Meteorologists attribute the extreme weather to the convergence of moist southeasterly winds and dry westerlies, intensified by multiple weather systems across northern and western India. The IMD expects the monsoon to continue advancing across the country, with more rainfall forecast for the coming days. While the rains are expected to keep temperatures in check, residents are urged to stay alert for potential disruptions due to storms, waterlogging, and strong winds.

Key Takeaways.

  • The 2025 monsoon has arrived early and with record intensity, breaking rainfall records in Delhi and Mumbai.
  • Multiple alerts are in effect across India, with Delhi under a ‘yellow’ alert for May 30–31 and red alerts in parts of Kerala and Karnataka.
  • Authorities are on high alert for flooding, and precautionary measures are being implemented nationwide.

Residents are advised to monitor official weather updates and follow safety advisories as the monsoon continues to impact large parts of the country.

How will the ongoing monsoon activity affect Delhi’s weather this week.

Delhi is set for a rainy and stormy end to May as the ongoing monsoon activity brings persistent thunderstorms, rain, and gusty winds to the region. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a ‘yellow’ alert for the city, warning residents of unstable weather conditions through the end of the month.

Key Weather Impacts for Delhi This Week:

  • Frequent Thunderstorms and Rain:The IMD forecasts cloudy skies, recurring thunderstorms, lightning, and periods of rain throughout the week. These conditions are expected to continue until at least May 31, with some days seeing heavier rainfall and others experiencing light showers or drizzle.
  • Strong Winds:Gusty winds ranging from 30–50 km/h, occasionally reaching up to 60 km/h during thunderstorms, are likely. These strong winds may cause minor disruptions, including fallen branches or temporary power outages.
  • Temperature Relief:Daytime temperatures are expected to remain below normal for this time of year, with maximums generally between 33–38°C and minimums around 25–27°C. This brings much-needed respite from the heat and rules out the likelihood of heatwave conditions for the rest of the month.
  • Improved Air Quality:The combination of rain and high winds has already led to a significant improvement in Delhi’s air quality, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) dropping to moderate levels. This trend is expected to continue as wet and windy conditions persist.
  • Safety and Advisory:Residents are advised to stay indoors during storms, secure loose items on balconies, avoid parking vehicles under trees or unstable structures, and keep emergency supplies ready. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi has issued a storm preparedness advisory in light of the forecast.

Summary Table: Delhi Weather Outlook (May 27–31, 2025)

Date Weather Conditions Rain/Storm Likelihood Winds (km/h) Max Temp (°C) Min Temp (°C)
May 27 Partly cloudy, thundery dev. Moderate 30–50 33–38 25–27
May 28 Partly cloudy, thundery dev. Moderate 30–50 33–38 25–27
May 29 Light rain/thunderstorm likely High 30–60 33–38 25–27
May 30 Light rain/thunderstorm likely High 30–60 33–38 25–27
May 31 Very light rain/thunderstorm Moderate 30–60 33–38 25–27

Delhi has already recorded its wettest May since 1901, and the city will continue to experience active monsoon conditions this week. Residents should expect more rain, cooler temperatures, and improved air quality, but remain alert for possible disruptions from storms and strong winds.
