Hyderabad Rumble Strips: Comfort vs. Safety?

Hyderabad Commuters Rumble Over Thick Speed Stripes

Commuters in Hyderabad are up in arms over recently installed rumble strips, which they claim are excessively thick and causing discomfort, safety hazards, and potential vehicle damage.

These strips, designed to alert drivers of lane departures or danger zones, are reportedly far thicker than recommended standards. Motorists are expressing concerns that the jarring vibrations are not only unpleasant but could also lead to back problems and suspension damage.

Harsha, who runs the Team Road Squad social media account, has been a vocal critic. They argue that the current design is a nuisance rather than a safety measure, particularly for motorcyclists. Harsha, along with many commuters, have urged the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) to re-evaluate the implementation.

The complaint centers on the thickness of the strips, likened to those found on highways but installed in urban areas. Drivers report feeling every bump, even at slow speeds, raising concerns about potential damage to vehicles.

One resident described the Durgam Cheruvu cable bridge as a “nightmare” due to the constant rumble. Similar concerns have been raised in other parts of the city, including PVNR Expressway, Habsiguda, Mehdipatnam, and the Indian School of Business road.

According to official guidelines, rumble strips in urban areas should be no more than 5 mm tall. However, commuters believe the strips in Hyderabad are significantly higher, posing a potential health risk, especially for those with back problems.

Road safety activist Lokendra Singh agrees, calling the current design “unscientific” and urging a reduction in thickness. He also criticized the placement of strips on curves, citing an example in Raidurgam that was later rectified after intervention by a government official.

With growing public outcry, Hyderabad officials now face the challenge of balancing safety with commuter comfort. Whether they will adjust the thickness or placement of the rumble strips remains to be seen.

Lizard in Biryani Scandal: GHMC Takes Action Against Hyderabad Eatery

GHMC Initiates Action Against Hyderabad Eatery After Lizard Found in Biryani

Hyderabad: A popular restaurant in Hyderabad is facing trouble with the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) after a customer found a lizard in their biryani. The incident occurred on a Saturday afternoon when a family ordered a mini chicken biryani from Bawarchi restaurant at RTC X Roads.

The customer, B. Sowmya, shared that her son Aditya, who is scared of lizards, spotted it just before taking a bite. Despite attempts to contact the restaurant for a resolution, there was no proper response. The restaurant eventually offered a refund, but Sowmya’s concern was about the potential risk to other children who might have consumed the contaminated food. Consequently, they filed a complaint at Chikkadpally police station.

Sudershan Reddy, GHMC’s designated food safety officer, reported unhygienic conditions in the restaurant’s kitchen during the inspection. A notice will be served to the hotel management, and if quality isn’t maintained in the future, legal action may be taken.

GHMC Streamlines C&D Waste Management to Curb Illegal Dumping

GHMC: Hyderabad’s rapid growth has led to a surge in construction activity and a significant increase in construction and demolition (C&D) waste. Illegal dumping of C&D waste is a common problem in the city, posing a threat to water bodies, damaging roads, and causing traffic congestion.

To address this issue, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is streamlining the process of C&D waste collection and transportation, in addition to creating awareness about responsible waste management.

Two agencies have been contracted to collect C&D waste from door to door and transport it to 12 Secondary Collection Transfer Points (SCTPs) located across the city. Citizens can raise a request through the MY GHMC app or contact the concerned agencies directly.

Hyderabad C&D Private Limited is responsible for collecting building waste from the remaining areas of the city. For Kapra, Musheerabad, Secunderabad, Khairatabad, Mehdipatnam, Charminar, Jubilee Hills, and other areas, Soma Srinivas Reddy Engineers and Contractors are responsible for collecting the waste.

Every day, these contractors collect and transport around 750 metric tonnes (MT) of C&D waste. The cost of transporting the waste varies depending on the area, but contractors can transport the waste directly to the SCTP at a reduced cost.

All the waste collected at the SCTPs is then sent to C&D waste recycling plants in Fathullaguda, Malkajgiri, Shamshabad, and Thumukunta, which together can recycle 2000 metric tonnes of waste per day.

The GHMC has also imposed penalties on unauthorized transportation of C&D waste. A penalty of Rs 25,000 and Rs 50,000 is levied for the first and second offenses respectively. For the third offense, along with a fine of Rs 1,00,000, the vehicle used for transportation will also be confiscated.

The GHMC’s efforts to streamline C&D waste management are expected to reduce illegal dumping and promote responsible waste management in the city.

Hyderabad GHMC Celebrates Chakali Ailamma’s 128th Birth Anniversary

Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) celebrated Chakali Ailamma’s 128th birth anniversary at its headquarters on Tuesday. Ailamma was a pivotal figure in the Telangana Armed Struggle, and is remembered as a democrat who fought for the rights of the oppressed. She is one of the tallest leaders in the region’s history.

GHMC Commissioner Ronald Rose, Additional Commissioner Sneha Sabarish Saroja, Joint Commissioner Jayant, and other officials paid their respects to Ilamma.

The State government organizes programs on Ailamma Jayanti every year to honor her sacrifices. Many welfare schemes for the welfare and development of women, Backward Classes (BCs), and Most Backward Classes (MBCs) have also been implemented.

Chakali Ailamma: A Revolutionary Leader

Chakali Ilamma (c. 1895-1985) was a revolutionary leader during the Telangana Rebellion. She was born into a Chakali family, a community of leatherworkers, and was married at a young age. However, she refused to accept the oppressive social norms of her time and became a vocal advocate for the rights of women and the poor.

In 1946, Ilamma led a group of women to cultivate a plot of land belonging to the local landlord, who had been exploiting the villagers. This act of defiance inspired others to stand up against the feudal lords of Telangana. Ilamma also joined the Communist Party of India and actively participated in the Telangana Armed Struggle.

Ilamma was arrested and imprisoned multiple times by the Nizam’s government. However, she remained undeterred and continued to fight for the liberation of Telangana. After the independence of India in 1947, Ilamma continued to work for the upliftment of the poor and marginalized.

Chakali Ilamma is a symbol of courage, determination, and resistance. She is an inspiration to all who fight for justice and equality.
