RTA Uncovers Illegal Sale of Fancy Numbers, Fraud

The Regional Transport Authority (RTA) in Hyderabad has found over 50 staff members involved in illegal activities. These include selling fancy vehicle numbers through illegal bidding and issuing fake insurance certificates. The fraudulent transactions were carried out by Database Administrators (DBAs) without their higher-ups knowing.

Complaints have been filed against these DBAs, accusing them of helping vehicle owners get their registrations, fitness tests, and other paperwork done without valid insurance. This has led to fake insurance documents being given out, which not only helps people save money but also puts road safety at risk. Vehicles, like auto-rickshaws and buses, are driving around without proper insurance. Senior officials are now investigating the situation in detail.

Cybercrime Probe Bank Staff’s Role in Fraud Surge

Cybercrime officials are looking into the involvement of bank staff in the increasing number of fraud cases, where criminals use ‘mule accounts’ to deceive people.

Recently, investigators discovered that fraudulent accounts, including current accounts, were being opened in banks in Hyderabad and across India. Basic verification processes were often ignored by bank employees, and large suspicious transactions went unnoticed.

Despite the Telangana Police conducting awareness programs and alerting bank management about these issues, bank staff have continued to neglect proper verification. As a result, criminal charges are now being brought against those involved. Two bank employees in Hyderabad have already been arrested for their role in a major financial fraud.

The investigation also revealed that brokers help fraudsters open these mule accounts using other people’s credentials in exchange for a commission. Some bank officials are suspected of receiving bribes to overlook these fraudulent activities.

Telangana Police have written to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), urging them to enforce stricter verification procedures for new bank accounts. The police are also conducting awareness programs for bank employees in the state, and coordinating with RBI and local police in other areas to ensure compliance with guidelines.

Leopard Spotted in Hyderabad: Forest Dept Investigates

Leopard Sighting Report in Hyderabad Sparks Investigation

A video showing what seemed to be a leopard walking near Hyderabad’s Miyapur Metro station went viral on social media, prompting the forest department to take action on Friday night.

The forest department quickly dispatched teams, including the anti-poaching squad, to verify the video’s authenticity. However, officials suggest the location in the video might not be near the busy Metro station but could be from an area beyond the Metro depot, where green patches and tree lines exist.

A senior forest department official mentioned the possibility that the leopard could have wandered into the city from nearby scrub forests, such as those around Ameenpur. The forest department is not ruling out the sighting, as leopards have been known to stray into urban areas before. They have captured leopards from the ICRISAT campus in the past, and there was also an earlier incident involving a leopard in Jubilee Hills.

The situation is being closely monitored to ensure public safety.

Supreme Court to Rule on Marital Rape Laws

Supreme Court to Review Constitutional Validity of Marital Rape Laws Granting Immunity to Husbands

The Supreme Court of India is set to decide whether laws that provide immunity to husbands from prosecution for marital rape are constitutional. These laws, under both the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), currently state that a husband cannot be charged with rape if he forces his wife, who is not a minor, to have sex with him.

A bench led by Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, along with Justices J.B. Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, is reviewing the issue. The court asked for the petitioners’ views on the government’s argument that criminalizing marital rape could harm marriages and disrupt family life.

Senior advocate Karuna Nundy, representing one of the petitioners, argued that the current exemption is unconstitutional. She claimed it violates several key rights, including the right to equality (Article 14), the right to freedom (Article 19), and the right to life and personal liberty (Article 21). Nundy urged the court to strike down the provision.

The court noted that Parliament, when creating the exemption, intended that a husband’s sexual act with his wife, if she is over 18, would not be considered rape. The justices now face the challenge of determining whether this immunity should be removed, and if so, whether the existing laws on rape would apply or if a new legal provision is needed.

This issue was brought to the Supreme Court after a split verdict in May 2022 by the Delhi High Court, which allowed the petitioners to appeal. The case involves significant constitutional questions, and the hearing is ongoing.

Under both the IPC and BNS, the current law states that sexual acts by a man with his wife, provided she is not a minor, are not considered rape. The government expressed concern that changing this law could lead to misuse, making it difficult to prove whether consent was given or not.
