Hyderabad GHMC Celebrates Chakali Ailamma’s 128th Birth Anniversary

Hyderabad GHMC Celebrates Chakali Ailamma’s 128th Birth Anniversary

Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) celebrated Chakali Ailamma’s 128th birth anniversary at its headquarters on Tuesday. Ailamma was a pivotal figure in the Telangana Armed Struggle, and is remembered as a democrat who fought for the rights of the oppressed. She is one of the tallest leaders in the region’s history.

GHMC Commissioner Ronald Rose, Additional Commissioner Sneha Sabarish Saroja, Joint Commissioner Jayant, and other officials paid their respects to Ilamma.

The State government organizes programs on Ailamma Jayanti every year to honor her sacrifices. Many welfare schemes for the welfare and development of women, Backward Classes (BCs), and Most Backward Classes (MBCs) have also been implemented.

Chakali Ailamma: A Revolutionary Leader

Chakali Ilamma (c. 1895-1985) was a revolutionary leader during the Telangana Rebellion. She was born into a Chakali family, a community of leatherworkers, and was married at a young age. However, she refused to accept the oppressive social norms of her time and became a vocal advocate for the rights of women and the poor.

In 1946, Ilamma led a group of women to cultivate a plot of land belonging to the local landlord, who had been exploiting the villagers. This act of defiance inspired others to stand up against the feudal lords of Telangana. Ilamma also joined the Communist Party of India and actively participated in the Telangana Armed Struggle.

Ilamma was arrested and imprisoned multiple times by the Nizam’s government. However, she remained undeterred and continued to fight for the liberation of Telangana. After the independence of India in 1947, Ilamma continued to work for the upliftment of the poor and marginalized.

Chakali Ilamma is a symbol of courage, determination, and resistance. She is an inspiration to all who fight for justice and equality.
