Mumbai Local Train Accident: 4 Dead, 9 Injured After Falling from Trains

A tragic accident took place in Maharashtra’s Thane district on Monday morning (June 9, 2025), where four people died and nine were injured after falling from two local trains.

What Happened?

The incident occurred around 9:30 a.m. between Mumbra and Diwa stations. Commuters standing on the footboards of two local trains, moving in opposite directions, accidentally brushed against each other when their bags collided. This led to 13 passengers falling off the trains.

Railway officials were informed by a train guard during the morning rush hour.

Victims

According to Thane Municipal Corporation:

  • Four people lost their lives:
    • Ketan Dilip Saroj (23)
    • Rahul Santosh Gupta
    • Mayur Shah (50)
    • Vicky Babasaheb Mukhedal (34), a police officer
  • Nine people were injured and taken to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital in Kalwa. Two of them, Shiva Gawali (23) and Anil More (40), are in critical condition and have been shifted to Jupiter Hospital for advanced care.

Government and Public Response

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis called the incident “unfortunate” and said the Railways are investigating the cause.

The Mumbai Railway Passengers Association blamed the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM), stating that repeated warnings about the risky Diva-Kalwa route were ignored. They also demanded:

  • An independent Mumbai local train administration
  • Separate routes for local trains between Kalyan and Kurla
  • No mail or express trains on these routes during peak hours

What Railways Said

Railway officials announced that new non-AC trains with better safety and comfort would be introduced by January 2026. These trains will have:

  • Louvred doors for better ventilation
  • Roof-mounted fresh air systems
  • Walk-through coaches to ease crowding

Injured List (with conditions)

  1. Shiva Gawali (23) – critical, shifted to Jupiter Hospital
  2. Adesh Bhoir (26) – stable
  3. Rihan Sheikh (26) – stable
  4. Anil More (40) – critical, shifted to Jupiter Hospital

Woman Dies After Falling While Changing Coaches at Charlapalli Railway Station

Hyderabad: A 33-year-old woman named Swetha died in a tragic accident at Charlapalli railway station on Sunday.

Swetha and her husband, M Venkatesh, are originally from Dondapudi in Andhra Pradesh’s Anakapalli district. They live in HMT Township, Lingampalli, with their two children. Venkatesh works at a private company, and Swetha was a homemaker.

As it was summer vacation, Swetha was taking the children to their hometown. Her husband helped them board the Janmabhoomi Express train at Lingampalli station. They were supposed to sit in coach D-8 but by mistake got into coach D-3.

When the train reached Charlapalli station, other passengers told them the seats were already taken. Swetha then realized they were in the wrong coach. She quickly got down with her children and ran to the correct coach, D-8. After helping the children get in, she tried to board the moving train herself. Sadly, she slipped and fell between the train and the platform.

She suffered serious injuries and died on the spot. Her body was taken to Gandhi Hospital for a post-mortem. The railway police are investigating the incident.
