Deadly Stampede at India Religious Event Leaves Over 50 Dead: What Happened?

More than 50 people have died in a tragic incident at a religious gathering in northern India. The event, known as a satsang, happened in Hathras district, Uttar Pradesh.

Officials say the disaster occurred when people were leaving the gathering in Mughalgarhi village. Witnesses described chaos as screams erupted and people fell over each other, resulting in many being crushed to death.

The victims, including many women and some children, are still being identified. Survivors shared harrowing accounts of the stampede-like situation as they tried to escape.

Rescue efforts were challenging, with injured individuals being rushed to hospitals in makeshift vehicles like pick-up trucks and motorbikes. Distressing scenes showed bodies piled up at hospital entrances, while distraught relatives cried out for help.

Authorities mentioned that the venue was overcrowded, and a committee had been formed to investigate the incident thoroughly. Medical procedures and investigations are ongoing.

Tragically, such accidents are not uncommon at large religious gatherings in India, where safety measures can be overlooked in crowded spaces. The community in Hathras is overwhelmed with grief and struggling to cope with the aftermath of this devastating event.

Delhi Woman’s 1,500 Gallstones: Surgery Success

In New Delhi, doctors at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital removed 1,500 stones from the gallbladder of a 32-year-old woman. The woman, who works in IT, often ate junk and fatty foods, which made her feel bloated and heavy. She used over-the-counter antacids for months to ease her discomfort.

She also had recurring pain in her upper right abdomen, which sometimes spread to her back and shoulder, along with nausea and vomiting. Her family doctor suggested an ultrasound, which revealed the stones in her gallbladder.

Doctors performed keyhole surgery to remove her gallbladder (Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy). They made small holes in her abdomen and took out the gallbladder containing more than 1,500 stones. The surgery was led by Dr. Manish K Gupta, who noted that the patient recovered quickly, eating normally and moving around independently the day after surgery.

Dr. Manish mentioned that changes in lifestyle, long gaps between meals, and prolonged fasting can cause bile to form stones in the gallbladder. These stones, if small, can move to the Common Bile Duct and cause jaundice or pancreatitis. Larger stones left untreated for a long time can even increase the risk of gallbladder cancer due to chronic irritation.

Nirmal Passengers Protest for More Buses

Passengers in Nirmal, Telangana, protested on Tuesday demanding more buses due to overcrowded routes. They stopped a TGSRTC bus and urged the transport corporation to increase services to Ponkal village and nearby areas.

Commuters expressed frustration over buses regularly exceeding their capacity, causing discomfort. They staged a sit-in protest at Ponkal village to emphasize the urgent need for more frequent bus services.

Local residents pointed out that the current scarcity of buses leads to overcrowding on routes to Ponkal, Potharam, Ananthapet, and Kamlkot. This compels them to resort to costly private transport options such as auto-rickshaws and vans to access essential destinations like the Mandal Center and district headquarters.

NEET-UG Paper Leak: CBI Arrests School Principal

Two people from Jharkhand have been arrested by the CBI in connection with the NEET-UG paper leak case. Dr. Ehsanul Haque, principal of Oasis School in Hazaribagh, and vice principal Imtiaz Alam were taken into custody by the Central Bureau of Investigation.

The investigation revolves around allegations that the question papers for NEET-UG were leaked. Investigators suspect that the leak might have originated from Oasis School. Earlier, Dr. Haque mentioned that they had faced difficulties with a digital lock on the boxes containing the question papers on the exam day, May 5. They had to resort to using a cutter to open the boxes after the lock did not open as scheduled.

The Bihar economic offenses unit, which investigated the matter, found that a serial code from a leaked question paper matched with those from Oasis School. As a result, officials took custody of the boxes containing the question papers for further investigation.

The Ministry of Education handed over the case to the CBI on June 22 for a thorough investigation into the alleged irregularities during the NEET (UG) 2024 examination.

NEET-UG Scandal: CBI Probes, Teachers Arrested

NEET-UG Controversy: CBI Takes Over More Cases in Bihar, Rajasthan, and Gujarat; Two Teachers Arrested in Maharashtra

The CBI has taken over five new cases involving alleged cheating in the NEET-UG medical entrance exam in Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Bihar. Additionally, two school teachers were arrested in Maharashtra on Monday. This is happening amid political tensions, with opposition parties ready to confront the central government in Parliament over the issue.

Previously handled by local police, the new cases involve investigations from Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Bihar. In Maharashtra, the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) arrested two school teachers from Latur and filed a case against four individuals linked to a cheating racket in NEET-UG.

The CBI is now investigating a total of six cases. On June 22, amidst protests and legal actions, the central government removed National Testing Agency (NTA) director-general Subodh Singh and handed the NEET-UG probe to the CBI.

CBI officials confirmed that they have re-registered one case each from Gujarat and Bihar, and three from Rajasthan as their own FIRs. They are also expected to take up the Latur case. Most cases, except the one from Bihar, involve isolated incidents of impersonation and cheating by local officials, invigilators, and candidates.

The economic offences unit (EOU) of Bihar Police arrested five more individuals on Sunday, bringing the total number of arrests to 18.

Maharashtra Case Details

In Latur, Maharashtra, a racket was uncovered that helped NEET students cheat in exchange for money. The Nanded ATS unit charged four people, including two school teachers, a Nanded resident, and a man from Delhi.

Teachers Sanjay Tukaram Jadhav and Jalil Khan Umar Khan Pathan were arrested. The other two, identified as Iranna Mashnaji Kongalwav from Nanded and Gangadhar from Delhi, are currently on the run. The case was registered under the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2024.

Jadhav was caught on Monday night, while Pathan was arrested late Sunday. According to the Latur DSP’s office, the ATS received a tip-off about the cheating racket. Suspicious information regarding the NEET 2024 exam was found on one of the accused’s mobile phones. Jadhav and Pathan, who runs a private coaching center, are involved in this scheme.

NTA Developments

Pradeep Singh Kharola took charge of the NTA on Monday and held meetings with officials. The education ministry has formed a seven-member panel led by former ISRO chief K Radhakrishnan to review the NTA’s operations and recommend exam reforms. This is the first of several steps to improve the exam process, prevent cheating, enhance data security, and reform the NTA.

The Centre also released rules under the new anti-paper leak law, instructing the National Recruitment Agency (NRA) to set standards and guidelines for computer-based tests and other examinations.

Political Reactions

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to abolish NEET, suggesting a return to state-conducted exams and calling for strict action against those involved in the cheating scandal.

Opposition MPs have demanded answers from the Centre in Parliament, claiming the issue causes hardship for students. As Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan took his oath in the Lok Sabha, opposition members shouted “NEET, NEET.”

The Centre has faced criticism over the paper leak. Mamata Banerjee suggested restoring the previous system of state exams to regain students’ trust. Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Anil Desai argued that the problem goes beyond individual arrests, indicating a larger network involved in the scandal.

Bihar Deputy CM Vijay Kumar Sinha accused officials linked to RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav of being involved, while RJD MP Manoj Jha pointed fingers at JD(U) and BJP leaders.

Following a paper leak in the medical entrance exam and the cancellation of UGC-NET due to compromised integrity, both cases are now under CBI investigation. Two other exams, NEET-PG and CSIR-UGC NET, were also canceled. The Congress-affiliated NSUI protested in Delhi, with several students detained before a planned march to Parliament.

11 Arrested in UP for Offering Namaaz on Govt Land

11 Arrested in UP Village for Offering Namaaz on Government Land

Eleven men were arrested in Turkaha village, Kushinagar district, Uttar Pradesh, after a video showed them offering namaaz on government land. This incident happened on Eid, despite clear instructions from the district administration and police to avoid any activities on the property.

Among those arrested were nine Muslim men and two Hindus, including the village head (pradhan), 46-year-old Kedar Yadav.

The Superintendent of Police, Dhawal Jaiswal, confirmed the arrests and mentioned that some police officers, including the station house officer Neeraj Rai, sub-inspector Om Prakash Yadav, and constable Mohan Singh, were removed from their posts due to negligence.

Kedar Yadav’s son, Shiv Kumar, explained that there was an ongoing dispute over the land. He said the district administration had prohibited any activities there, and the family was unaware of the prayers until the video went viral. Kedar Yadav, a first-time pradhan, was arrested for not preventing the prayer.

The village, mostly inhabited by Muslims, has been tense recently as two groups vied for control over the land. One group wanted to build an Eidgah (a place for Eid prayers), while the other, consisting of Hindu villagers, wanted to construct a marriage hall. Both proposals were rejected by the district administration, according to SP Dhawal.

To prevent any conflict, a senior revenue department official had instructed the local police to ensure no one tried to occupy the land. In April, the police organized a meeting with both communities, resulting in a written agreement to avoid any activities on the land.

When the video surfaced, the police conducted an initial investigation and filed a report against 11 people. They were charged under Section 153-A of the Indian Penal Code for promoting enmity between different groups based on religion and other factors, said Jitendra Tandon, the current Station House Officer of Khadda police station.

Hyderabad Shop Closing Confusion Sparks Public Outcry

Confusion and frustration have gripped Hyderabad due to conflicting messages about when shops should close. The Hyderabad police clarified on Monday that social media posts suggesting shops must close by 10:30 or 11:00 pm were false. However, the situation turned chaotic again on Tuesday when a tweet from Revenue Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy reiterated similar rules.

This tweet, posted at 11:27 am and later deleted, added to the confusion sparked by earlier conflicting statements. Citizens took to social media to vent their frustrations. One user criticized the situation, likening it to a circus rather than effective governance. Another questioned whether the government was running the state or just staging a comedy show.

A video showing a police patrol van warning of lathi charges after 11 pm further fueled public outcry. Critics argue such measures are counterproductive, especially for young people who are unfairly targeted instead of being provided with parks and recreational facilities.

Overall, these mixed messages not only disrupt daily life but also undermine public trust in the authorities.
