Kumaraswamy Likely to Join Modi Cabinet, JD(S) Eyes Agriculture Ministry

Former Karnataka Chief Minister and Janata Dal (Secular) leader, HD Kumaraswamy, is expected to be sworn in as a Minister in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Union Cabinet on Sunday evening, according to party sources.

Though the exact portfolio for Kumaraswamy has not been confirmed yet, the JD(S) has shown a keen interest in securing the Agriculture Ministry. This move comes after the party won two seats in the recent Lok Sabha elections.

“Kumaraswamy has received the invitation for the swearing-in ceremony. He will be sworn in as part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s new Council of Ministers,” a party insider disclosed.

Preparations are in full swing at the residence of JD(S) leader HD Deve Gowda at 5 Safdarjung Lane in New Delhi, where celebrations are being planned for the occasion. Prime Minister Modi will also take the oath for a record-equalling third consecutive term this evening.

The anticipated inclusion of Kumaraswamy in the Union Cabinet is seen as a strategic effort by the BJP to bolster its influence in southern states, particularly Karnataka. The JD(S) holds substantial sway in Karnataka, especially in regions dominated by the Vokkaliga community. This partnership is expected to enhance the BJP’s outreach and support base in the state.
