Kulgam Encounter: Two Soldiers Martyred, Operation Enters 9th Day
An encounter between security forces and terrorists in Kulgam, Jammu and Kashmir, has now continued for nine days. Two soldiers lost their lives in the line of duty, and four others were injured in firing on Thursday night. So far, 11 security personnel have been injured since the start of the operation.
Officials said this is one of the longest anti-terror operations in the past decade. Named ‘Operation Akhal’, it began on August 1 after intelligence reports about the presence of terrorists in the Akhal forests of south Kashmir. Security forces launched a search and cordon operation, which turned into a fierce gunfight.

So far, three terrorists have been killed. The operation has been challenging because the militants are hiding in hilly, forested areas, frequently changing positions to evade capture.
The Indian Army’s Chinar Corps paid tribute to Lieutenant Colonel Pritpal Singh and Jawan Harminder Singh, saying their bravery and sacrifice will always inspire the nation.
Drones, helicopters, and para commandos are being used to track the terrorists. Senior police and army officials, including J&K Police Chief Nalin Prabhat and Northern Army Commander Lieutenant General Prateek Sharma, are monitoring the situation closely. Security forces remain determined to continue the operation until all terrorists are neutralized.
