Kerala man loses ₹95,000 to cyber fraud while seeking water purifier service
Thiruvananthapuram: In a shocking case of online cyber fraud, a 52-year-old man from southern Kerala lost ₹95,000 after being duped by cyber criminals.
The victim had been trying to get his water purifier serviced and searched online for a toll-free customer care number. He dialed one of the numbers listed on the internet, not realizing it was fake.
The fraudsters, posing as service executives, tricked him into sharing sensitive banking details under the pretext of making a small service payment. Soon after, he discovered that ₹95,000 had been withdrawn from his bank account.

Police said the incident highlights how fraudsters are increasingly targeting people through fake helpline numbers available online. Authorities have urged the public to avoid trusting unverified numbers from search engines and to always contact service providers through their official websites or apps.
A case has been registered, and an investigation is underway.
