Hyderabad on High Alert as Cyclone Montha Nears Andhra Coast

Hyderabad has been put on high alert as Cyclone Montha, heading toward the Andhra Pradesh coast, is expected to bring heavy rain and possible flooding to the city over the next few hours.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the impact of the cyclone will be felt in Hyderabad from Tuesday evening. The city is likely to experience cloudy skies, continuous rain, and occasional thunderstorms. The IMD has warned of waterlogging in low-lying areas and traffic jams, advising authorities to take precautions to clear stagnant water.

The cyclone is expected to make landfall between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam, near Kakinada, on Tuesday night as a severe cyclonic storm with wind speeds of 90–100 kmph, gusting up to 110 kmph. After landfall, it will move inland toward Telangana, bringing more rain and strong winds.

IMD Telangana Meteorologist G.N.R.S. Srinivasa Rao warned that even moderate rain could cause flooding in several parts of Hyderabad. “People should avoid unnecessary travel,” he advised.

The IMD’s seven-day forecast suggests that rainfall will increase further on Wednesday, raising fears of flash floods, traffic disruptions, and waterlogging, as the ground is already soaked from previous rains. Temperatures are expected to stay around 30–32°C, with high humidity.

  • Orange alert (high preparedness): Peddapalli, Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Mulugu
  • Yellow alert (be cautious): Nirmal, Nizamabad, Kamareddy, Medak, Sangareddy, Vikarabad

In neighbouring Andhra Pradesh, the situation is more severe. The IMD has issued a red alert for 16 districts, warning of extremely heavy rainfall and strong winds. Thousands of people have been evacuated, and Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu has directed officials to ensure zero casualties.

Authorities in Hyderabad have urged residents to stay indoors, follow official weather updates, and avoid travel unless necessary as Cyclone Montha moves closer.
