Four Indian Soldiers Killed in Kashmir as Violence Increases

In Indian-administered Kashmir, a gunfight with suspected militants resulted in the deaths of four soldiers. This incident is part of a recent increase in attacks in the disputed region.

The soldiers were attacked on Monday night during a search operation in the forests of Doda district in Jammu. This follows an incident last week where five soldiers were killed in an ambush in another part of Kashmir, a region contested by both India and Pakistan.

Since 1989, an armed insurgency against Indian rule has led to thousands of deaths in Kashmir. Though violence has decreased in recent years, the Jammu region has recently experienced more bloodshed. There have been at least eight attacks since June.

Last month, nine people were killed and 33 injured when suspected militants fired on a bus carrying Hindu pilgrims. On July 8, five soldiers died in an ambush in Kathua district.

The latest gunfight started when militants, reportedly hiding in the forests, opened fire on the Indian forces conducting a search based on intelligence. The Indian army reported that five soldiers were critically injured, and four of them later died from their injuries. Reinforcements have been sent to the area to stop the attackers from escaping.

Kashmir has long been a contentious region between India and Pakistan, with India accusing Pakistan of supporting militants to disrupt peace. Pakistan denies these allegations.
