Anti-Ageing Treatments: Experts Warn of Risks

Hyderabad: Experts Warn Against Unsafe Anti-Ageing Treatments

Doctors urge people to choose certified professionals for such procedures

Hyderabad: After recent concerns linked to the death of actor Shefali Jariwala, there is growing attention on the safety of anti-ageing treatments.

What are anti-ageing treatments?

Anti-ageing treatments are used to reduce signs of ageing like wrinkles, sagging skin, and dark spots. Popular procedures include Botox, dermal fillers, laser therapy, and HIFU. These treatments are generally safe—but only when performed by trained professionals in clean, certified clinics.

The risk of unsafe procedures

Problems arise when untrained people perform these procedures in unhygienic conditions. Dr. K Kranthi Varma, a dermatologist at Renova Hospitals, warned that choosing cheaper or uncertified options could lead to infections, allergic reactions, or other health issues.

How to stay safe?
  • Always go to clinics run by certified dermatologists.
  • Avoid places offering unusually low prices.
  • Look out for side effects like swelling, rashes, or pain that could mean complications.
Pros and cons

These treatments can boost self-confidence and improve appearance without surgery. But there are drawbacks too:

  • Side effects like bruising or uneven texture.
  • High costs.
  • Temporary results that require repeat sessions.

Social media and changing views on ageing have made such treatments more popular, especially among young people. Still, many are unaware of the long-term risks.

Side effects to know

Dr. Varma said that while Botox and fillers are widely used and considered safe, incorrect use can lead to serious problems.

Some common side effects include:

  • Swelling and bruising
  • Lumps under the skin
  • Rare cases of blood vessel blockage, which can damage skin

The dangers of glutathione injections

Glutathione, a natural antioxidant, is often used in anti-ageing treatments. While safe in the right medical setting, using it through injections—especially without proper care—can be risky.

Dr. Varma explained that injecting glutathione on an empty stomach or when dehydrated may cause a sudden drop in blood pressure or even lead to heart issues. People with existing heart conditions are more at risk.

Lack of approval and health warnings

Glutathione injections are not approved by the US FDA for cosmetic use. Some countries have reported serious side effects, including liver and kidney damage and nerve problems.

Anti-ageing treatments can offer benefits, but they should always be done under expert supervision. Avoid cheap shortcuts, and always check the credentials of the person doing the treatment to stay safe.
