Texas Floods: Over 80 Dead, Search for Missing Continues

Severe floods in central Texas have killed more than 80 people, including 28 children, and dozens are still missing. Rescue teams are working day and night to find survivors, but more rain is expected, which could make things worse.

Kerr County Hit Hardest
The worst damage happened in Kerr County. Sheriff Larry Leitha confirmed that 68 people died there, including many children. Nearby areas also reported 14 more deaths. In total, 41 people are still missing, according to Texas Governor Greg Abbott.

Summer Camp Devastated
Rescue efforts are focused on Camp Mystic, a Christian summer camp near the Guadalupe River. Around 750 people were staying there when floodwaters rushed in overnight, destroying cabins and sweeping people away. Ten girls and a camp counselor are still missing.

Ongoing Rescue Efforts
So far, more than 850 people have been rescued. Emergency crews are using helicopters, boats, and drones to search through flooded areas. They are also dealing with dangerous conditions like heat, snakes, and unstable ground.

What Caused the Floods?
Experts say the floods were caused by record-breaking rainfall—up to 15 inches in less than an hour. This made the Guadalupe River rise more than 26 feet very quickly, flooding nearby towns.

Concerns Over Warnings
Governor Abbott said the flood warning systems will be reviewed. Some people are asking if better forecasting could have helped prepare for the disaster.

Trump Responds
Former President Donald Trump said he may visit Texas on Friday. He called the flooding a “100-year catastrophe” and said “nobody expected it.” He rejected claims that his cuts to weather services and emergency agencies weakened early warnings.

When asked about possible changes to FEMA or the National Weather Service, Trump gave no clear answers but did sign a disaster declaration to allow federal aid and rescue help.
