Sakshi Wins India’s First Gold at World Boxing Cup 2025

Hyderabad: Indian boxer Sakshi won the country’s first gold medal at the World Boxing Cup 2025 held in Astana, Kazakhstan. She put up a strong performance in the women’s 54kg final and defeated USA’s Yosline Perez with a unanimous decision from the judges.

The 24-year-old, a two-time youth world champion, impressed everyone with her speed and powerful punches.

India’s boxing team has done well overall in the tournament and is already guaranteed 11 medals. Earlier, India had won six medals in the Brazil leg of the World Boxing Cup, including one gold and one silver.

On Sunday, four Indian boxers competed in the morning session. Among them, only Sakshi managed to win gold.

In the women’s 48kg final, Meenakshi gave a tough fight but lost narrowly (3:2) to local boxer Nazym Kyzaibay.

Jugnoo (men’s 85kg) and Pooja Rani (women’s 80kg) both won silver medals after losing their finals. Jugnoo lost to Kazakhstan’s Bekzad Nurdauletov, while Pooja was defeated by Eseta Flint from Australia — both matches ended in a 5:0 scoreline.

Later in the evening, four more Indian boxers will compete for gold:

  • Hitesh Gulia (men’s 70kg)
  • Abhinash Jamwal (men’s 65kg)
  • Jaismine (women’s 57kg)
  • Nupur (women’s 85+kg)

India hopes to add more medals to its tally as the tournament continues.
