Two Tourists from Hyderabad Killed by Falling Rocks in Uttarakhand
Two tourists from Hyderabad, Nirmal Shahi (36) and Satya Narayana (50), died in a landslide accident in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district on Saturday. The accident happened on the Badrinath National Highway near Chatwapeepal, between Gauchar and Karnaprayag, while they were returning from a Himalayan temple on a motorcycle.
Heavy rains caused the landslide, leading to boulders rolling down the hill and hitting the tourists. Police have recovered their bodies from the rubble.
The heavy rains have caused multiple landslides, blocking the Badrinath National Highway in more than six places. The blocked spots include Kameda, Bhanir Pani, Pagalnala, Pinola, and Kanchanganga. The Rudraprayag-Kedarnath National Highway is also blocked.
Personnel from the National Highways Authority of India and the Border Roads Organisation are working to clear the roads. As a safety measure, all schools in the Rudraprayag district were closed on Saturday.
The meteorological department has issued a red alert for “heavy to very heavy rainfall” in the Kumaon and Garhwal regions for Saturday and Sunday, advising people to stay away from water bodies during this time.
