Lizard in Biryani Scandal: GHMC Takes Action Against Hyderabad Eatery
GHMC Initiates Action Against Hyderabad Eatery After Lizard Found in Biryani
Hyderabad: A popular restaurant in Hyderabad is facing trouble with the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) after a customer found a lizard in their biryani. The incident occurred on a Saturday afternoon when a family ordered a mini chicken biryani from Bawarchi restaurant at RTC X Roads.
The customer, B. Sowmya, shared that her son Aditya, who is scared of lizards, spotted it just before taking a bite. Despite attempts to contact the restaurant for a resolution, there was no proper response. The restaurant eventually offered a refund, but Sowmya’s concern was about the potential risk to other children who might have consumed the contaminated food. Consequently, they filed a complaint at Chikkadpally police station.

GHMC’s food safety wing, responding to multiple complaints, initiated an inquiry. Food safety officer Swathi B inspected Bawarchi, collecting samples for lab testing. The restaurant claimed they were not responsible as the food was bought from the takeaway counter.
Sudershan Reddy, GHMC’s designated food safety officer, reported unhygienic conditions in the restaurant’s kitchen during the inspection. A notice will be served to the hotel management, and if quality isn’t maintained in the future, legal action may be taken.
