Last Date to File ITR Approaches: Refund Processing Gets Faster
The last date to file ITR for the Assessment Year (AY) 2025-26 is just around the corner, and taxpayers are rushing to complete their filings. With only 18 days left before the deadline, the Income Tax Department has already recorded significant activity on its portal. As of August 27, 2025, more than 3.84 crore income tax returns (ITRs) have been filed. Out of these, 3.67 crore returns have been verified, and nearly 2.43 crore returns have already been processed.
Faster Refunds for Taxpayers
One of the biggest concerns for taxpayers every year is the time it takes to receive their refunds. However, in recent years, the Income Tax Department has taken multiple steps to simplify and speed up the entire process—from issuing ITR forms and online utilities to quick verification and refund credits.
Thanks to these reforms, the average time taken for refund processing has dropped considerably. In fact, in some surprising cases this year, a few taxpayers have even received their refunds on the same day they filed their returns.
While these are still rare instances, it reflects how efficient the system has become. However, large-scale data to confirm whether the majority of taxpayers are experiencing such quick refunds is not yet available.

Why Filing Early Matters
Filing ITR before the last date to file ITR is always advisable. Early filing not only avoids the last-minute rush but also ensures faster processing and quicker refunds. Delaying your return until the final days often leads to system overload and longer wait times for refunds.
