Kendriya Vidyalaya Teacher Dies by Suicide; Husband and Father-in-Law Arrested in Dowry Case

Ghaziabad police have arrested the husband and father-in-law of a 31-year-old Kendriya Vidyalaya teacher who allegedly died by suicide at her residence in Vasundhara. The arrests, made on Monday, followed a dowry harassment complaint filed by the woman’s family.

The incident occurred around 1:30 PM on Sunday when the woman, identified as Anvita Sharma, was alone at home. Her husband, Dr. Gaurav Kaushik, and their four-year-old son were not present at the time. Shortly before her death, Anvita sent a message to her brother, Amit Sharma, along with a suicide note. “I love you, bhai. Please forgive me and take care of everyone,” read her final message.

Amit stated that Anvita had been facing marital difficulties since shortly after her marriage to Kaushik in 2019. “There were frequent disputes, and we had advised her to consider divorce. However, Kaushik convinced her to reconcile,” he claimed.

According to Abhishek Shrivastava, ACP, Indirapuram, a one-and-a-half-page suicide note was recovered from the scene. “She was declared dead at the hospital, following which the police were informed. The suicide note was found at the location,” he said.

The note reportedly stated, “Sorry, I cannot tolerate this anymore, so I am leaving this world. My husband wanted a beautiful wife who could manage all household chores and also earn money. I did everything I could, yet he always found fault. In every argument, he would taunt me and my family… that he earns more than all of us. He did not allow me to pursue further studies after marriage and had access to all my accounts. He married my job, not me.”

Anvita’s father, Anil Sharma, alleged that he had spent approximately ₹26 lakh on the wedding. “We sensed their family’s greed when they initially demanded a vehicle. I was hesitant, but later, I decided to gift it to my daughter. However, it was registered in Kaushik’s name,” he said.

Since October 2019, Anvita had been working as a Fine Arts teacher at Kendriya Vidyalaya in Delhi’s Dallupura.

Following the complaint, an FIR was registered against Gaurav Kaushik, his father Surendra Sharma, and his mother Manju under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including:

  • Section 85 – Cruelty by husband or relatives
  • Section 80(2) – Dowry death
  • Section 115(2) – Voluntarily causing hurt
  • Section 352 – Intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace
Additionally, charges under the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961 have been included.

The investigation is ongoing.
