Historic Moment in Telangana as Gaddam Prasad Kumar Becomes First Dalit Speaker

Hyderabad, December 15, 2023: In a big step for fairness and including everyone, the Telangana Legislative Assembly has chosen its first Dalit Speaker, Gaddam Prasad Kumar. This is a special moment for the state, showing progress toward social justice and fair representation for communities that have been left out in the past.

Kumar, a senior member of the Congress and a former minister, was elected without any opposition on December 14th, 2023. His election got support from different political parties, including the ruling Bharatiya Rashtra Samithi (BRS), its partner All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), and the Congress’s ally, the Communist Party of India (CPI). Notably, BJP members did not take part in the nomination process.

This important election comes almost twenty years after the last Speaker from the SC community, K Pratibha Bharathi, served in the undivided Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly. Kumar becoming the Speaker is a crucial step in breaking down old barriers and making sure that Dalit communities have an equal say in the state’s top legislative body.

After being elected, Kumar thanked all the parties for their support and promised to be a fair and unbiased Speaker. He highlighted his dedication to making sure that everyone in society is properly represented and that Telangana becomes a more just and equal place.

Gaddam Prasad Kumar’s election as the first Dalit Speaker of the TS Assembly is seen as a win for social justice and a sign that people are recognizing the importance of including everyone in Indian politics. This historic event is expected to have a positive impact on marginalized communities in the state, and it sets an example for other states to work towards better representation and inclusivity in their own legislative bodies.
