Bangladesh Plane Crash: 19 Dead After Jet Hits School in Dhaka

Dhaka, July 21, 2025 — A Bangladesh plane crash involving a Bangladesh Air Force training jet has claimed at least 19 lives and injured dozens more after it struck a school building in the capital city on Monday.

The Chinese-made F-7 BGI training aircraft crashed into the Milestone School and College in Uttara, Dhaka, shortly after taking off at 1:06 pm. The impact caused a massive fire, according to rescue officials.

Brigadier General Zahed Kamal, head of the Fire Service and Civil Defence, confirmed that 19 bodies were recovered from the school grounds, and more than 50 others were seriously injured.

Officials said that most of the victims were students. At least 72 people were hospitalized with burn injuries and trauma. Critical cases are being treated at Dhaka Medical College, National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery (NIBPS), and Combined Military Hospital (CMH).

Doctors at NIBPS said that eight people remain in critical condition, and the number of incoming patients continues to rise.

The pilot, identified as Flight Lieutenant Mohammad Towkir Islam, survived the crash and is being treated in the ICU at CMH.

Eyewitness Fahim Hossain, a student at the school, said the plane hit the building just 10 feet away from where he stood. “It crashed into the primary section around 1:15 pm,” he said.

Emergency teams, including firefighters, ambulances, and Air Force helicopters, rushed to the scene for rescue operations. A teacher, speaking anonymously, said security personnel were placing bodies in bags and transporting them to CMH.

In response to the tragedy, the Bangladesh government declared July 22 a day of national mourning, with flags to be flown at half-mast.

Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus expressed deep sorrow, calling the incident “heartbreaking” and extended condolences to the families of the victims.
