Mexico Campus Shooting: 14-Year-Old Killed, Suspect Arrested
A tragic Mexico campus shooting at the University of New Mexico left a 14-year-old boy dead and another person injured early Friday morning. Police have arrested 18-year-old John Fuentes in connection with the incident.
The shooting happened at Casas del Rio, a student housing complex, during orientation week. According to authorities, four people were playing video games in a dorm room when Fuentes suddenly opened fire. The teenager died at the scene, while the others, including the shooter, fled.
The violent act triggered a shelter-in-place order and led to the evacuation of parts of the university. Police later tracked the suspect using license plate readers and arrested him during a traffic stop in Valencia County.
Investigators are still trying to understand the motive behind the Mexico campus shooting and how the individuals involved are connected. Police believe it was an isolated incident and there is no ongoing threat to the campus.
University officials described the day as heartbreaking and offered condolences to the victim’s family. The university president assured students and families that safety remains a top priority, especially with the fall semester set to begin on August 19.

The shooting took place around 1:30 a.m. Friday. Not long after, a 19-year-old man with a gunshot wound showed up at the hospital and said he had been shot on campus. Police later found the 14-year-old’s body during a sweep of the student housing area.
As a precaution, the university closed its Albuquerque campus for the rest of the day but announced it would reopen on Saturday. The injured victim is recovering from non-life-threatening injuries.
This Mexico campus shooting is part of a growing trend, marking at least the 33rd school shooting in the U.S. so far this year. University and law enforcement officials have pledged to strengthen campus security and support affected students and families.
