Open Manholes in Hyderabad Risk Lives

Open Manholes in Hyderabad Threaten Commuters’ Safety

Hyderabad: Commuters in Hyderabad are facing increasing dangers due to open and broken manholes scattered across city roads. These uncovered pits, often left without proper warning signs, have become a serious hazard, especially during the monsoon season when waterlogging conceals them completely.

From the bustling JNTU Road to the tech-heavy Madhapur area and residential stretches like Bandari Layout, poorly maintained manholes are putting both motorists and pedestrians at risk. These open pits can lead to severe accidents, with vehicles swerving at the last moment or falling into them, endangering lives and causing traffic chaos.

Despite the clear threat, civic authorities appear largely indifferent. In many places, the only warning comes in the form of dry branches, stones, or broken traffic cones—hardly sufficient to alert fast-moving traffic. In some areas, there are no warnings at all, leaving road users completely unprepared.

The lack of proper barricades and reflective caution signs makes the situation worse, especially at night or during rains. Water-filled roads often mask these manholes entirely, making them virtually invisible until it’s too late.

Civic apathy and poor maintenance continue to be key reasons behind this recurring issue. As the city grows and traffic increases, urgent attention and accountability from municipal bodies are needed to ensure safer roads for everyone.
